What size does
your home need?

Five questions. You get a real number worked out from your home, the size of system it needs, and what that system costs — before you give us anything. Nobody phones you unless you ask them to.

Size your system

Question 1 of 5 BermaxHVAC load engine v2.4

How big is your home?

The living space, in square feet. A close guess is fine — anywhere from 300 to 5,000.

How many floors above ground?

How old is your home?

Older homes hold less heat in and let more air through, so they need more from the system.

What are your windows like?

Glass loses far more heat than wall does, and lets the summer sun straight in.

What is under your home?

Heat leaves through the floor and the foundation walls too, not just the roof.

How many bedrooms?

A quick way to tell how many people live there. People give off heat, which matters in summer.

Want these emailed to you?

Optional — you already have your answer, and it is yours whether you fill this in or not. Leave an address and we will send the figures and the systems that fit them. What we do with it.

This is a first estimate, worked out from your answers using standard heat-loss figures. We size the heat pump on the cooling number, not the heating one. The same box does both jobs, and a unit big enough for the coldest night would be far too big for August. It would cool in short bursts and never run long enough to pull the damp out of the air. The furnace is what covers the coldest nights. Before we order anything we come and measure: which way your windows face, how much air your ducts really move, and what is actually in the walls.

Why sizing is the whole job.

Most systems around here are too big, and it is not an accident. Guessing high is quicker than measuring, and an oversized furnace never gets a complaint in January.

It gets one in July. An air conditioner picked to cover the coldest night is far too big for a summer afternoon: it cools the air quickly, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off before it has pulled any moisture out. The house ends up cold and damp rather than comfortable, and the equipment wears out cycling on and off.

So we size the cooling to the cooling load and let the furnace cover the cold end. That is the reason the two are sold as a matched pair rather than picked separately.

The calculator above does the same arithmetic we do: heat loss through the walls, the windows, the roof and the floor, air leaking in and out at a rate that depends on how old the house is, and the heat people and appliances put back in. It is an estimate, and we measure properly before anything is ordered — but it is an estimate built the right way round.

Then you know the price.

Every complete system we install is $13,782 to $16,565 plus HST. The calculator tells you which one your home needs, so you get the actual number rather than a range.
