A KeepRite air conditioner on a concrete pad against the clapboard wall of a house

Cold is easy.
Comfortable is not.

Almost any air conditioner can drop the temperature. The difference between one that works and one you put up with is whether it also takes the moisture out, and that comes down to size.

Bigger is worse.

This is the part that surprises people, so it is worth being plain about.

An air conditioner does two jobs at once. It lowers the temperature, and it pulls water out of the air — which is why there is a drain on it. The second job only happens while it is running, and it takes a while to get going.

Put in a unit that is too big and it cools the air very quickly, the thermostat is satisfied, and it shuts off after a few minutes. It never runs long enough to dry anything. The house ends up cold and clammy, you push the thermostat down chasing comfort you are not going to get, and the equipment wears out starting and stopping.

A correctly sized unit runs for longer stretches on a hot day. That feels like less machine and more comfort, and it is the single biggest difference between a good install and a bad one.

Guessing high is quicker than measuring and nobody ever complains in the first week. That is why so much of what is out there is oversized.

Matched, not just bolted on.

The outdoor unit is only half of it. Inside, sitting on the furnace, is a coil that the refrigerant runs through, and the two are rated as a pair.

Put a new outdoor unit on whatever coil happens to be there and the pair has no rating at all. The efficiency figure on the box was measured with its matching coil, and without it the number means nothing. It will still cool. You will simply have paid for efficiency you are not getting, and have no way of knowing.

Every system we install is a matched set, and the coil is part of the price rather than a line added later.

The same two days.

Refrigerant joints brazed under flowing nitrogen so no scale forms inside the pipe. The line set vacuumed and held to prove there is no leak before any refrigerant goes in. A pad under the outdoor unit so it is not sitting on the ground. The charge set by measurement rather than by feel.

The whole system,
from $13,782.

Plus HST, installed, with the matched furnace, the coil, the formed transitions, the thermostat and a ten-year parts and labour warranty. Five questions tell you which size your home needs and what that one costs.
